Downtown Charleston is the peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, from the Battery and the French Quarter up King Street and Meeting Street to the medical district and beyond. It's dense, so dozens of competing businesses can sit within a few blocks, and visitors searching from a hotel see a different map than locals searching from home.
The peninsula is inside City of Charleston limits, so businesses there need a city business license through the Customer Self-Service portal; licenses expire April 30.
